Simple Design Makes Master Bath Shine

The space available for this remodeled master bath in San Francisco was a plain rectangular box. But rather than resist the simplicity of volume, design/build general contractor Stephen Shoup embraced it. Taking a familiar material in a novel direction, he used Caesarstone composite to frame the mahogany-veneered vanity, the mirrored medicine cabinet above it, the window, and two sets of recessed shelves. He furred out the wall behind the vanity so that its gypsum board surface lies flush with the limestone tile that surrounds the tub. A slatted ipe drainboard recessed into the tiled floor aligns precisely with the tub surround. Frameless frosted glass doors to the bedroom and a private water closet slide on hardware tucked neatly into the ceiling.
