Is Your Company on a Hike or Heading Toward a Summit?

Good business owners aim for a summit, defining exactly what it looks like, and the steps and time needed to reach it.

I am in New Orleans, participating in the annual Remodelers Summit, a joint production of Remodelers Advantage and Remodeling Magazine which occurred Tuesday evening, all-day Wednesday, and wrapped up this morning. As one of several facilitators for Remodelers Advantage, I also facilitate two Remodelers Advantage Roundtable meetings, one took place on Monday-Tuesday and the second takes place Thursday-Friday.

These peer group meetings provide each of the 10 or so group member companies about 50 minutes of time focused on their issues and their company. The input a company owner receives during their focus time can make a big difference in the company’s success going forward.

The focus of the the Summit is “Legacy.” A powerful word. We will all end up with a legacy. “What do you want yours to be?” and “What are you doing now to create it?” are questions only you can answer.

In my almost 20 years of facilitating these meetings, I see two types of business owners.

One type of owner is on a hike. They are busy, taking many steps and expending energy, but often not with an end in mind.

Now we are in the middle of good times—which are not going to last forever. These business owners, for one reason or another, are not being as successful as they could be. In fact, some of their businesses are not just stagnant, they are falling backwards.

The other type of owner is aiming for a summit. They define what that looks like, the steps needed to make it there, and the time needed to reach the summit. Then they make any needed changes.

It is inspiring to watch a business owner remodel their business into a well-running profit which relies less and less on the owner on a daily basis.

What are you reaching for? Keeping your head above water? Or making it to a summit?

The thing is, every person has a goal. Some set their goal and then get pulled forward by it, day-by-day. Others look backwards to only then see that their goal was not very well defined, and, consequently, did nothing to help them achieve any level of success.

What is your summit? What do you want your legacy to be?

Get clear about both these essential questions or live a life shaped by others. It’s your choice.
