As smart home devices become more commonplace, they have increasingly penetrated outdoor product settings, according to The Freedonia Group.

According to the Cleveland-based research organization’s Outdoor Living Products 2020 report, smart technologies have become more widespread in grills, lighting, backyard theater systems, and security systems. Grills and cooking appliances are now equipped with technology to allow users to control temperature and set timers from tablets or smartphones, while security systems, including cameras with night vision, motion sensors, and lighting can also be controlled and monitored from an electronic device. Such smart home innovations allow homeowners to adjust features without having to step away from guests.

The Freedonia Group forecasts the market for outdoor cooking, entertaining, and recreation products will grow 4.0% to $9.9 billion in 2020 and increase at an annual rate of 4.0% through 2024. The organization believes homeowners are increasingly likely to dedicate parts of their outdoor spaces to dining and entertainment, which will spur demand for furniture, outdoor kitchen equipment, and patio heating products.
