While the hammer, in essence, dates back to the Stone Age, the advent of mechanical nail drivers began around 1862, with the Doig Manufacturing Company’s development of the first stationary machine to feed and drive bulk nails. This multiple-headed nailing machine was used exclusively in industrial plants for the mass production of pallets, crates and other wood products.

But to get from there to a practical portable nailer that was close to those we use today would take another 100 years to evolve.
