OSHA has fined CJM Roofing in West Palm, Fla., for exposing employees to fall and other hazards at three separate residential worksites in Royal Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie, Fla. The company faces penalties totaling $291,724 for the alleged violations.
OSHA initiated the investigations at the Florida worksites in mid-2019 as part of its Regional Emphasis Program for Falls in Construction after agency inspectors observed CJM Roofing employees working on roofs without fall protection. OSHA cited the company for failing to use a fall protection system, for failing to ensure that portable ladders extended above the upper landing, for failing to require employees to wear eye and face protection when operating pneumatic nail guns, and for failing to conduct regular inspections of the jobsite. OSHA has inspected the company five times in the past five years, resulting in repeat violations of the fall protection hazard.
“Companies that fail to comply with safety and health requirements are placing workers at risk for injuries and illnesses,” OSHA Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area director Condell Eastmond said in a public statement. “This employer must take immediate action by conducting required hazard assessments and correcting dangerous working conditions.”
CJM Roofing has 15 business days from the receipt of the citations and proposed penalties to comply, request an informal conference with their OSHA area director, or to contest the findings.
