Ridgid Mobile Miter Saw Stand

Carpenter Brian Way gave the gravity-rise miter-saw stand from Ridgid a hard look. Here's what he found after five months of daily use.

This is the Ridgid MS-UV (Mobile Miter Saw Stand and Utility Vehicle) Model AC9946. I have used my share of stands over the last 25 years and when it comes to the gravity-rise type, this one operates quite smoothly. The biggest improvement (for me) made on this stand is the 12-inch wheel diameter (previously 6 inches). This was a great asset, allowing me to pull it up a stairway by myself; the large- size wheels did not get caught on the stair tread nosing. The catch mechanism is operated by your right foot and is easy to get at, but, more importantly, it functions easily. I will also add that the saw stand has perfect balance standing in the vertical position. The wheels have a rubber coating on them unlike many stands with hard plastic wheels of lesser quality.

For about five straight months, we used this stand daily on a commercial millwork project. The project was in a 70,000-sq.ft. medical facility, and the saw went where we went. As most jobsites, it was as if we were working in off-road conditions. I must say, this stand tested well. It is easy to transport over obstacles (such as cords, plywood, and debris) with the larger wheels in both the collapsed position and the upright position. The ease of folding the stand is quite impressive, with the simple tap of a foot lever and relieving the weight off of the legs, it folds up fluidly and balances perfectly with a 12-inch Ridgid chop saw hanging off of it. The outrigger supports work great; however, the workpiece stops seemed a little flimsy if you are looking for accurate continuous repetitive cuts.

PROS / CONS
Pros:
– Large, rubber-coated wheels
– Single-step release for easy up and down
– Tool-free, easy-to-use lock levers for fast adjustment
– Stores vertically with mounted saw without fear of falling over
Cons:
– Material stops on extension arms don’t always stay accurate
– A little big and clunky (but its stability makes up for it)

BOTTOM LINE
Overall, I would say this is a solid stand, better and easier to use than most on the market today in its category. With a price tag of $199, you will not be disappointed in the quality of this stand. (Plan on 20 minutes of unboxing and assembly). It is great for the everyday carpenter who needs the ability to be mobile on a jobsite with the peace of mind of using a stable stand under an expensive saw. I will continue to use this stand, and I already gave away my old one.
