Most of us are dealing with limited space or even shared space, which has been the case for me for years. Until recently my shop was located in the basement of my house right next to the Bilco door—convenient to get in and out of, but with 6’5” ceilings and a small footprint (about 300 sq. ft.), it was a tough space to work in.

The Wood Whisperer had the opposite scenario before he moved recently. His shop in Arizona was a spacious 1,800-sq.ft. interior space that he was able to outfit from scratch. He moved recently to Colorado, where he set up in a four-car garage that’s half the size of his previous shop. Whether you’re renting space in a warehouse or a commercial space, or cramming your tools into a small garage or basement, he’s got some good suggestions on layout and organization.
