Metal head flashing should be installed wherever possible, to kick out water from the surface of the window. Ready-made flashing is available off the shelf, but Matt Risinger prefers to order his own from a sheet metal shop. (Jordan Smith, also of the Build Show, offers a great companion piece looking inside the sheet metal shop Matt uses.) In this video, he describes the two simple window measurements you’ll need for a custom order. Then he reviews the various available flashing materials and thicknesses, and their relative costs. Copper remains at the very high end. Stainless steel or aluminum (28 gauge) is popular and about half the cost of copper. Coated galvanized is good for different applications, and in turn is about half the cost of stainless steel. With so many easy-to-order choices available, there’s no reason for not getting head-flashing product that’s right for your project.
