OSHA cited New Jersey roofer Eastern Contractors for exposing employees to falls and other safety hazards at a state worksite, according to a news release from the agency. The roofer faces $18,890 in penalties for the alleged violations.

OSHA initiated an investigation in October of last year after the local Paterson, N.J., police department notified the agency that an employee suffered a fatal fall during roofing removal and replacement work. OSHA Inspectors determined the company exposed workers to fall hazards, failed to cover roof openings, failed to provide a fall protection system, and failed to train workers on safety hazards present at the worksite.

Eastern Contractors has 15 business days from receipt of the citations and proposed penalties to comply, request an informal conference with its OSHA area director, or contest the findings.
