What Keeps Slipping Away?

You are what you do with the time you have on the planet. So why not make some choices this year on how you want to spend it?

When I was young, time seemed to go so slowly. A day would take forever to go by. One birthday to the next? Never-ending.

Now, I can’t believe how quickly a year goes by. Watch out—it’s going to happen to you eventually!

You are what you do with the time you have on the planet. So why not make some choices this year on how you want to spend it?

Work “On” Your Business
Schedule time to work “on” your business, instead of being consumed with working “in” your business.

Working “on” your business is how you improve its performance. Examples include reading books on business, planning for the company’s future and helping to train your employees. Any business needs a business plan, but most small business owners don’t create one because they’re so busy.

Busy doing what? Working “in” the business. Working to produce what the business has sold. Dealing with the problem of the day. Making the 4th material run of the week.

By blocking out time to work “on” your business, you become more likely to achieve the success you deserve. Catch yourself not working “in” the business. All it takes is developing new habits and not being a prisoner of how you were.

Take Time Away
What are you working for? Is it to be totally consumed with your business? Or are you working to have a personal life that is fulfilling?

Your business should be a tool that helps you live the life you want. Scheduling time away from the business is essential for the success of your business.

Why? If you are always there, you are not running the business. The business is running you.

Work on your business so that it depends on you less and less. The first step is to schedule blocks of time away from it.

They could be long weekends or a multi-week trip. It could be a half day off once a week or every other week. Start small and see what happens.

The Unavoidable Truth
Next month I have a birthday with a zero in it. I’m way beyond being able to double my age and have a realistic chance of still being alive!

I had to work on not working. Many business owners are like that.

I’m glad that I learned how to take time for myself and my family. That I accepted I was not the best at everything. That I needed to rely on others.

What do you want to be looking back on? Take the time to make those things happen now. Otherwise, that time will just keep slipping away!
