The construction market is hot in Charleston, S.C. And that means busy times for the area’s building departments, according to a story in the Post and Courier (see: “Building boom swamps Charleston-area planning agencies,” by Warren L. Wise).
“Across the region, municipal planning offices are reporting historically high levels of plans and permits for everything from home additions to multistory apartments and hotels, new homes and commercial and industrial buildings,” the paper reported. “‘We have a record number of submissions for review right now,’ said Jacob Lindsey, the city of Charleston’s director for Planning, Preservation and Sustainability.”
“In North Charleston, planning and zoning director Gwen Moultrie said her staff of 13, including herself, moves as quickly as it can to keep up,” the paper reported. “In Mount Pleasant, the fastest-growing city east of the Mississippi River, town administrator Eric DeMoura pointed to record-high levels of building activity, pushed upward by increased permit applications for additions and repairs to homes such as adding a pool or a porch.”
