Townsfolk in Scituate, Massachusetts, have been questioning FEMA’s redrawn flood plain maps for their area ever since the new maps were released for comment. Now, consultants hired by the town have succeeded in putting the new maps on hold again — for now. The Scituate Mariner has a report (see: “FEMA to review flood maps after group raises concerns,” by Hannah Sparks).
“Taking local officials’ comments on the new flood maps into consideration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has decided to delay issuing the letter of final determination,” the paper reported. “The letter triggers a six-month window in which the maps take effect. Until now, the maps were due to take effect this summer.”
Proposed flood maps for Scituate and nearby Marshfield and Duxbury have already been modified after comments were submitted by the Woods Hole Group, a consulting firm, on behalf of the two towns. At this point, only a few small revisions to the latest maps are in the works, according to FEMA official Marilyn Hilliard.
