It doesn’t take a hurricane to make a flood on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Winter storms are more common — and frequently worse. Last weekend’s Super Bowl storm didn’t wash away any homes or roads, but it did bring ocean flooding to roads and beachfront properties — a reminder that the Outer Banks are living with ocean flooding hazards, not just occasionally, but routinely.
Floods briefly closed vulnerable NC 12, the main highway connecting the Outer Banks with the mainland, ABC 13 NewsNow reported (see: “NC 12 back open after morning flooding“). And local resident Brett Barley was on the beach to capture video footage of storm waves surging around the pilings of beachfront houses and swirling past the oceanfront lots to soak the road.
