Kitchens have changed dramatically since Grandma ran the place single-handedly, whomping bread dough and transforming apples into applesauce. Today, with smaller families and more women in the work force, kitchens must suit a variety of family types and lifestyles. The conventional nuclear family makes up only about one half of American households. Single people, childless couples, one-parent families, and elderly people make up the rest.
