Allison Bailes – a trusted voice on HVAC, building science, and home performance – has turned his attention to indoor air quality in the past few years, and since the outbreak of the pandemic, to learning as much as he can about how to clear the air of deadly coronavirus. In his most recent blog, he shares a simple, low-cost filtration box that can be made with some MERV-13 filters and a box fan.

Allison has made a few four-sided filter boxes for his own home and shares with us how to make them. On why we might want to, he gives a strong tip of the hat to Shawna Henderson of Blue Horse Energy in Nova Scotia, who “nerds out” in her blog “3 Principles for Good IAQ: Eliminate, Ventilate, Filtrate” to explain what types of filters work to reduce or eliminate virus-laden droplets (as well as smoke, and other tiny, dangerous particulates). Both blogs are well worth reading, and both offer simple, practical ways to clean the air and perhaps provide a little peace of mind for your family and clients.
