Hold Your Fire: CalStar Brick Lifecycle Assessment

CalStar Brick Carries Less Embodied Energy

1 MIN READ

A life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted by national architecture firm Perkins+Will found that CalStar non-fired bricks have an 84% smaller carbon footprint and use 81% less manufacturing energy cradle-to-gate* than traditional clay bricks.

“CalStar’s mission of reducing the environmental impact of building products can only be quantified with third-party-verified, completely transparent product benchmarking,” says Joel Rood, CalStar Products CEO. Using recycled fly ash as a binder rather than clay means the bricks require significantly less heat to cure, thereby reducing the product’s environmental impact.

“Making truly informed decisions about green materials can be difficult without quantifiable product benchmarks,” says Doug Pierce, senior associate at Perkins+Will. “LCAs, when coupled with other indicators and metrics, can help provide those vital benchmarks. CalStar is on the leading edge of this burgeoning trend.”
