Construction workers don’t often wear sunscreen under their shirts. But if you’re wearing an ordinary T-shirt, UV rays are still getting to your skin.

More and more work-wear options are becoming available that offer UV protection right within the fabric. Tim Uhler (aka @awesomeframers) , a framing contractor in Washington state, gives us a run-down on some comfortable protective choices.

There’s a super important subtext to this review. You wouldn’t think at first UV protection is such a big deal in Washington state, where Tim Uhler lives and works. But it’s precisely because people there underestimate damage from the sun that endows the state with one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the country. Turns out UV penetrates cloud cover as well as ordinary cotton T-shirts. If you work outside, this should be a concern regardless of the site location.
