Knee Spaces
Speaking of wheelchair users, Owens also pointed out the functionality of knee spaces under sinks, cooktops, and desks, as a universal design option. “I do have a mixed feeling about these because those of us who are working in a high design aesthetic know that someone using a wheelchair may need the amenity,” he says. “But it’s a challenge to sacrifice that prime base cabinet storage real estate. There are happy mediums though.
- Finish the floor under the base cabinet so there’s always a clean look.
- Install an apron panel to hide and protect users from mechanicals or rough edges.
- Look for roll-out work islands to use inside a knee space design. This allows the otherwise “empty” space to serve as storage unless and until the knee area is needed.
