What had been a tight, closed-off tract house in Chevy Chase, Md., was converted into a spacious, airy, U-shaped home that lives up to its name: “Casa Abierta.” The design won Kube Architecture of Washington a citation for best renovation in the Residential Architect Design Awards competition. “This project took what was a pretty flat and typical backyard and made it into something just extraordinary,” said juror Josh Shelton. “It’s just full of energy and full of pop.” More photos and story
