Problem Solved

To maximize living area, the design program called for elevating the bearing point on which the roof rafters sat. The modification – which, according to Moore, is not used often enough – allows for reclaiming square footage typically lost to crawl space.

But the clever idea isn’t as simple as it sounds, especially under a tighter-than-usual time line in the middle of a record wet season. “Lifting and reframing the roof was the toughest part of the project,” Nassar says. “It was a tricky framing job, and we were always dancing around the weather.”

Nassar’s framing crew didn’t establish the bearing point spot-on, so the subsequent framing was no good. With the homeowners’ tight deadline looming, Nassar had to act fast. Within 12 hours, he added a team from another job to his crew to start the framing over and get the project back on schedule.

“If it takes pulling people from other jobs to get a project back on track, that’s what we do,” Nassar says. “We’ve had pop-ups under tar paper for only a day. This wasn’t one of them.”
