Work is a roller-coaster ride. There are good days and bad days. If you are lucky, the good days outnumber the bad.
What made work great for me was working with capable people. In fact, there were times when I was moved to tears by how competent different people were.
How did that happen? What did these employees do that overwhelmed me? What did they demonstrate that was so unusual in positive ways? TEARS tell the story.
Time
Seeing an employee value time was inspiring. Time is the only thing you cannot make more of. Their time is what you pay your employees for.
Watching an employee move with grace and forethought through a task or their day was a good experience.
Energy
Great employees bring a sense of energy to their work. Not all move quickly but they work smartly, often in surprising ways.
High performers pull the rest of the team up. Actions do speak louder than words, particularly in this case.
Accountability
Experiencing employees who embrace accountability was incredible. The great ones want to be held accountable. In fact, they hold themselves to a higher standard than you do!
When something goes wrong they focus on making it right. They go public with their mistakes, making it less likely that others will make the same mistakes.
Results
Great employees know that the company gets paid for results, not activity.
Clients want their completed projects to work and to be completed on time. High performing employees automatically understand that and work hard to leave the company’s clients singing its praises.
This focus on results is one of the hardest things to teach a person. They either get it or they don’t. Those who get it are part of the solution.
Success
Having the mix of great employees and the company being successful is fantastic.
It does not happen all the time. When it does you and your team feel wonderful.
TEARS running down my cheeks is what happened when I experienced all the above in great employees.
