The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has honored two industry professionals with its annual Homes for Life Awards, which recognizes Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) remodelers for their aging-in-place and universally designed spaces.

Bonnie Lewis, Allied ASID, Associate IIDA, CAPS, owner of 55+ TLC Interior Design LLC in Scottsdale, Ariz., was honored with an award in the Major Space Remodel category. The award-winning remodel was of the first floor of a home. The client wanted his 90-year-old parents, who have dementia, to move in with him. Lewis created an ADA-compliant master suite, bathroom, wardrobe, and hallways for the parents’ living space. She also raised the sunken living room to help eliminate fall risks.

Thomas Ashley Jr., CAPS, CGP, CGR, owner of Expand Inc. in Denham Springs, La., was awarded in the Single Space remodel category. Ashley’s space created a multi-functional sensory room for a child with autism. The sensory room was created to be safe and interactive for both the boy and his brother. Ashley received input for the design from four different CAPS designers, Expand Inc.’s production team, and from the child’s occupational therapist. The room also solves some much-needed storage issues and can be used as a pool house if needed.
