By changing the location of the front door from the short side (south) to the long side, DCC changed the circulation axis on the first floor. From the front door you can walk into the formal rooms or into the informal areas or circulate vertically to the basement or second and third floors. Access to the yard was important for the Shutts’ growing family. DCC added two porches on what is now the back of the home, connecting them by a spiral staircase.
