Luxury remodeling firm Detail Renovations of New York City recently combined two Central Park West apartments—a studio and a one-bedroom unit—into one two-bedroom home. The challenge was to design a single apartment with an airy, open feel while also creating a private space for guests and preserving the stunning views overlooking Central Park. It was a tall order with only a studio and a one-bedroom to work with, explained CEO Daivd Dynega. To create a second bedroom would have required chopping up the open space.
How to create an open foor plan and an intimate bedroom in the same space? Dynega’s answer was to create a convertible space. Detail Renovations built a customized retractable divider wall that can be stored in a closet when not in use. Made of multiple frosted glass panels, the divider wall sits on a recessed track, allowing the panels to be configured to completely separate the two living spaces, limit the flow of foot traffic between the spaces, or stay completely open. A hidden Murphy bed doubles as a shelf, and guests have a private bathroom, so the area can become a smaller living room and fully functioning second bedroom when needed.

To highlight the views of the park, the large windows were minimally adorned and have low-profile shades to maximize the size of the openings. In the master bedroom, multiple mirrors were precisely placed at a specific angle above the bed to reflect the view so it is the first thing you see upon entering the room. In addition to enhancing the stunning views, these help flood the space with natural light.
