A Quick Fix for Hinge Mortises

While a pin-nailer might come in handy, here's a cleaner way to create a form for filling hinge mortises.

Remodeling contractor Keifer Limeback (@toolaholic on Instagram) has a tool-related tip for repairing and filling in hinge mortises on painted door jambs. Limeback fills the mortise with bondo, but first tacks a piece of wood to the side of the jamb with CA glue as a “form” for bondo. He uses a fast-set gel from Titebond that hardens within 10 seconds once sprayed with activator. He takes care to only glue the “form” piece to the jamb. Once finished with the appropriate number of layers of bondo, he runs a sharp knife down the joint a few times then snaps it off. The picture above was taken after the first layer of bondo. He cleans the patch up with 120-grit sandpaper for a flawless, seamless repair – as if the mortise never existed.
