Deck Guard Post Trick

KeyLock Newell Post Fastener makes a strong, fast connection.

I’m relating a story from a phone call here with one of the most creative carpenters I know. Sometimes he doesn’t even know it and then we end up without the recorded evidence I insist on to prove I’m right.

But this video can help.

While the video shows the Fastener Unlimited KeyLock post base being installed in an interior stair assembly—check out JLC’s stair layout tips here—my friend Steve was able to adapt the system to a deck. He plowed out his double band joist, set the bracket, used a galvanized lag, and set the post. Decking is notched around the post.

As with any creative re-application, check local codes.
