History of the Screw

Definitely the world’s most entertaining video on the history of the screw.

When the Real Engineering presenter calls a hex screw a “naughty little polygon” with just effusive joy in his voice, I was in.

As were my neighbors, who could probably hear me roaring through my closed office windows.

He goes on to add the need for “crisis wine,” which he keeps in his toolbox, and makes fun of himself for his life being a lie because he is engineer instead of someone who has practical knowledge—and the tools to go along with it.

But this video is not really a comedy.

Much along the lines of One Good Turn (read it if you’re a book guy; it’s well written and amazing), the presenter starts with Archimedes, who is credited for inventing the rotating helix to move water. He goes on from there and makes fun of Canada for being the only ones to use Robertson screws.
