Since we last reviewed portable planers (aka power hand planers), brushless motors and improvements in tool batteries have opened up options for more cordless tools. Makita lead the way with the first cordless hand planer. Milwaukee, Bosch, and Hitachi were the only other cordless options available, until now.
DeWalt entered the cordless planer market this month with the introduction of its brushless DCP580B, which runs on its 20V Max lithium ion battery platform. Like other planers in its class, it has a 3-1/4-in. width cutting capacity. It has a rabbet capacity of 5/64-in. and adjusts in 3/32-in. increments. It has the same 15,000 RPM rating as its corded cousin, the DW690K. The bare tool weighs 6.7 lbs, and can be hooked up to DeWalt’s universal dust collection system.
The bare tool is available for $199, and comes with DeWalt’s standard 3 year warranty.
