Fast Hand-Held Mortiser

How fast can you cut 2-inch-by-6-inch-deep mortises into Douglas fir?

1 MIN READ

I’ve seen some amazing timber work over the years. Contributing editor Robert Courtney’s brother, Doug Courtney, built these white oak trusses using a combination of traditional joinery and fasteners. He had a Mafell mortise machine there, as well, but I’d never seen one in use before. Here, in the post below, @stillwater_woodworks (Phillip Mitchell) says that this Mafell LS103Ec mortiser is fast – faster than its Makita counterpart. Here’s a clip of him running 2” x 9 3/4” x 5 3/4” deep. He makes nine cuts in about one minute.
