My mother had a little hot-dog-style vacuum when I was a kid. Give the cord a tug and it snapped back into the body of the unit. I loved it.
As a contractor, I think it should be building code that all vacs have this feature.
Instead, this feature—auto rewind—has made its way to something I have never sprung for: Klutch’s 50-foot hose reel (for which I can find no company website, just places to buy it like this randomly selected Northern Tool site).
The Klutch reel is powder coated and has a stopper knob.
For $90, the 3/8-inch-by-50-foot rubber hose with 300-psi maximum rating can be bolted to the wall. The hose locks at the desired length. The reel itself is powder coated. I can see the stopper knob being chafed or getting snagged, but maybe not.
I have visions of never coiling up a hose again.
