Scribing Wood to Stone

An angle grinder does the easy work of hogging out material; your scribing skills and how well you yield it are the hard parts.

In this video, master carpenter Jesse De Geest shares his knowledge of an old Japanese tradition of scribing a post onto a large stone. He’s modified the technique to comply with building codes, complete with epoxied anchors and a concrete footing. I don’t know that I’d have the patience to do this—but it is impressive to see, and I can appreciate the talent it takes to do this work well.
