Tools for Lead-Safe Paint Removal

1 MIN READ

Here’s an interesting article about four tools that can be used to remove paint without turning the site into a toxic waste dump.

The story was written by Tom O’Brien, my former cohort at JLC. Three of the tools he tests are set up to collect dust; two plane off paint and the other sands. The fourth item is an infrared heater that softens paint so you can scrape it off the substrate. It’s different than older methods of heating paint in that the temperature is limited to 400 degrees – which reduces the risk of fire and is below the temperature at which lead vaporizes.
