First, I adore the term “whiskey stick” and the association it has with guys with hand-nailing the houses that we, with our modern power tools and need for speed, now envy the craftsmanship of. But we probably wouldn’t want their old, easy-to-knock-out-of-true levels.
Enter the dialed-in and detailed-looking Kapro levels. They have two features that I look for—and rarely find—in a level.
Obviously, I want it to stay true and Kapro’s three solid-acrylic, shockproof vials look industry standard in this class of level.
One thing Kapro hits on in its copy is its tilted, horizontal vial. It says its “patented Optivision design …brings you the most visible vials in the field.” I know I’ve misread vials before when looking at them from an angle (called “parallax”), so making them easier to see is good.
I also want to be able to mark into a corner, say, for laying out shelves in a linen closet. I’ve never understood the value of an inset end-stop. Kapro says you can mark to the end. I also don’t want a beveled edge my pencil can ride in off the layout mark. Kapro says its beams are square.
