In the Bucket

This gadget is not a gadget.

Whenever we talk about plumbing, my friend and remodeling colleague Andy mentions, “Yeah, I have that in my plumbing box.” I, of course, thought that meant an actual box, like with a handle and lid. I came to learn on a recent plumbing repair he was doing, however, that it’s more than that.

Yes, the Werner JobBucket is in fact box-shaped, but it’s more bucket than box—and it’s definitely not a gadget.

You could use it for any number of things, but it looks dialed in for plumbing more than anything else. With two half-circles molded into the top rim, cutting short lengths of pipe with a hand saw (check out the E-Z Stroke burr-free PVC saw here ) is easy. For remodelers who aren’t full-tilt plumbers, oftentimes a mobile kit for repairs is all we need. The JobBucket certainly holds PVC primer and cement, flux and solder, paper, a smattering of fittings, and the small amounts of the other things required for leak repair—even if you source some of what you need (Channel-Locks, adjustable, and so on) for the job at hand from other tool boxes to populate the JobBucket on the way into the job. This is what Andy did.

JobBucket hooks onto the bosses in a stepladder (if it has them; certainly Werner designed it for its ladders). This is great if you repurpose it for electrical or you’re running plumbing overhead.

And, to mention once more my preference for cube-shaped items (like this shop vacuum), it is cube-shaped and easy to store in the van or shop.

It’s small so it can go into the sink base with you, or at least hang out outside while you paw around in it for a basin wrench or flashlight. And, for the inevitable crouched-in-the-corner job—like this one, a washing machine re-plumb (thank you previous no-trap-needed “plumber”)—you can empty it out and flip it over, and it works as a nice knee-saving stool.

Simple, smart, $25. Nice one Andy.
