A 2015 Look at Labor Shortages

For years there were too many tradesmen for the number of construction jobs. Now there are not enough—but the shortages are worse for some trades.

According to a recently released analysis by BUILDER, labor shortages have become a serious problem for homebuilders—even though there are 1.03 million fewer construction jobs than there were at the peak of residential construction employment in 2006.

The severity of the shortages varies by trade and is hitting large builders harder than small ones. The initial study data shows that the skillsets builders have the greatest degree of difficulty sourcing are framers, followed at some distance by finish carpentry, drywall, and electrical.
