Though still beautiful, my clients’ backyard was clearly in trouble. Situated atop a knoll in Belmont, Calif., the backyard contained a gunite pool, which was built in the early 1960s but now had developed a noticeable crack and was regularly losing water. The surrounding concrete and wood decks were also failing. In fact, the backyard was in motion, largely the result of rotted wood laggings in the retaining wall that flanked one side of the pool and was supporting everything.
