16. What do you think about reporting illegally operating competition not following the RRP requirements when required to do so?
Surprisingly, calling out non-compliant competitors is not as one-sided an issue among uncertified contractors as one might expect. While no uncertified remodelers say they have reported illegally operating competition, 8% said they definitely will, and 11% said they’re thinking about doing so. Sixteen percent said they definitely will not report non-compliance, though another 14% said that while they don’t plan to report anyone, they have nothing against those who do. Fully half of uncertified contractors are undecided on the issue.
“Perhaps my biggest surprise was that only 16% of those who responded here indicated they would not report a contractor operating in violation of the RRP rule, and just over half are still trying to decide,” McCadden says. “As we all wait to see what happens with the economy and how long a real recovery will take, I predict that their ability to pay their mortgage and put food on the family table will persuade many remodeling business owners to take action and defend their ability to run honest businesses.” McCadden further discusses this issue on his blog.
